Eating Etiquette آداب الاكل

  • [5376]  عن عُمَرَ بنَ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : كُنْتُ غُلامًا فِي حَجْرِ رَسُولِ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم  وَكَانَتْ يَدَي تَطِيشُ فِي الصَّحْفَةِ  فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : (( يَا غُلامُ سَمِّ الله وَكُلْ بِيَمِينِكَ وَكُلْ مِمَّا يَلِيكَ  )) فَمَا زَالَتْ تِلْكَ طِعْمَتِي بَعْدُ .

Narrated `Umar bin Abi Salama

I was a boy under the care of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and my hand used to go around the dish while I was eating. So Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said to me, ‘O boy! Mention the Name of Allah and eat with your right hand, and eat of the dish what is nearer to you.” Since then I have applied those instructions when eating

  • [5398 ] عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيفَةَ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم (( لا آكُلُ مُتَّكِئاً ))

Abu Juhaifah reported the Prophet (peace be upon him) as sayings

I do not eat while reclining

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

  • [5409]  عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال : مَا عَابَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم  طَعَامًا  قَطُّ إِن اشْتَهَاهُ أَكَلَهُ وَإِنْ كَرِهَهُ تَرَكَهُ .

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported

Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) never found fault with food. If he had inclination to eating it, he would eat; and if he disliked it, he would leave it.

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

  • [5458 ] عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ  رضي الله عنه  : أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم  كَانَ إِذَا رَفَعَ مَائِدَتَهُ  قال : ((الحَمْدُ لله كَثِيراً طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا  فِيهِ غَيْرَ مَكْفِيٍّ وَلا مُوَدَّعٍ  وَلا مُسْتَغْنًى عَنْهُ رَبَّنَا ))

Narrated Abu Umama

Whenever the dining sheet of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was taken away (i.e., whenever he finished his meal), he used to say: “Al-hamdu li l-lah kathiran taiyiban mubarakan fihi ghaira makfiy wala muWada` wala mustaghna’anhu Rabbuna.”

  • (2020)  عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رضي الله عنهما أَنَّ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ (( إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ  فَلْيَأكُلْ بِيَمِينِهِ ؛ وَإِذَا شَرِبَ فَلْيَشْرَبْ بِيَمِينِهِ ؛ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَأكُلُ بِشِمَالِهِ وَيَشْرَبُ بِشِمَالِهِ  ))

( صحيح مسلم )

Ibn ‘Umar reported the Prophet (peace be upon him) as sayings

When any of you eats, he should eat with his right hand, and when he drinks, he should drink with his right hand, for the devil eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand

( Sahih Muslim )

  • (2033)  عَنْ جَابِرٍ رضي الله عنه  قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم  يَقُولُ : (( إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ  يَحْضُرُ أَحَدَكُمْ عِنْدَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ  مِنْ شَأْنِهِ ؛ حَتَّى يَحْضُرَهُ عِنْدَ طَعَامِهِ ؛ فَإِذَا سَقَطَتْ مِنْ أَحَدِكُمُ اللُّقْمَةُ ؛ فَلْيُمِطْ مَا كَانَ بِهَا مِنْ أَذَى ؛ ((ثُمَّ لِيَأكُلْهَا ؛ وَلَا يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ ؛ فَإِذَا فَرَغَ  فَلْيَلْعَقْ  أَصَابِعَهُ ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لا يَدْرِي فِي أَيِّ طَعَامِهِ تَكُونُ البَرَكَةُ

Jabir reported

I heard Allah’s Apostle (peace be upon him) as saying: The Satan is present with any one of you in everything he does; he is present even when he eats food; so if any one of you drops a mouthful he should remove away anything filthy on it and eat it and not leave for the devil; and when he finishes (food) he should lick his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of his food the blessing lies

  • (2059) عَنْ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِالله رضي الله عنهما قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم  يَقُولُ (( طَعَامُ الوَاحِدِ يَكْفِي الاثْنَيْنِ ؛ وَطَعَامُ الاثْنَيْنِ ؛ يَكْفِي الأَرْبَعَةَ ؛ وَطَعَامُ الأَرْبَعَةِ  يَكْفِي الثَمَانِيَةَ  ))

( صحيح مسلم )

It was narrated from Jabir bin ‘Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said

“The food of one person is sufficient for two, the food of two is sufficient for four, and the food for four is sufficient for eight.”

( Sahih Muslim)

  • (2734)  عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم (( إِنَّ الله لَيْرْضَى عَنِ العَبْدِ أَنْ يَأكُلَ الأَكْلَةَ  فَيَحْمَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا ؛ أَوْ يَشْرَبَ الشَّرْبَةَ  فَيَحْمَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا ))

( صحيح مسلم )

Anas b. Malik reported that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said

Allah is pleased with His servant who says: Al-Hamdu lillah while taking a morsel of food and while drinking

( Sahih Muslim)

  • (3780) عَنْ قَبِيصَةُ بْنُ هُلْبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ  قَالَ : قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وَسَألَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ : إِنَّ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ طَعَامًا أَتَحَرَّجُ مِنْهُ  فَقَالَ (( لا يَتَخَلَّجَنَّ فِي صَدْرِكَ  شَيْءٌ ضَارَعْتَ فِيهِ النَّصْرَانِيَّةَ ))

Narrated Qabisah ibn Halb

A man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): Is there any food from which I should keep myself away? I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Anything which creates doubt should not occur in your mind by which you resemble Christianity

  • (3292)  عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : (( مَا أَكَلَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلَى خِوَانٍ ؛ وَلَا فِي سُكُرَّجَةٍ  ؛ قاَلَ : فَعَلامَ كَانُوا يَأكُلُونَ ؟ قَالَ : عَلَى السُّفَرِ  .

( سنن ابن ماجه )

It was narrated from Qatadah, that Anas bin Malik said

“The Prophet (peace be upon him) never ate from a dish or from an individual plate.” He said: “From where did he eat?” He said: “From the dining sheet.”

  • (3297)  عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عَنْ النَّبِيَّ  صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ :  (( إِذَا نَامَ أَحَدُكُمْ  وَفِي يَدِهِ رِيْحُ غَمَرٍ  فًلَمْ يَغْسِلْ يَدَهُ  فَأَصَابَهُ شَيْءٌ فَلَا يَلُومَنَّ إِلَّا نَفْسَهُ ))

( سنن ابن ماجه )

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said

“If anyone of you goes to bed with a smell emanating from his hand, and he does not wash his hand, and something happens to him, he should not blame anyone but himself.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah)

  • (3300) عَنْ عَبْدِالله بْنِ الحَارِثِ بْنِ جَزْءٍ الزَبِيدِيَّ  رضي الله عنه قَالَ : كُنَّا نَأكُلُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي المَسْجِدِ : الخُبْزَ وَاللَّحْمَ .

It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin Harith bin Jaz’ Az-Zubaidi said

“At the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) we used to eat bread and meat in the mosque.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah)

  • (3301) عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رضي الله عَنْهُمَا قَالَ : كُنَّا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَأكُلُ وَنَحْنُ نَمْشِي  وَنَشْرَبُ وَنَحْنُ قِيَامٌ .

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said

“At the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) we used to eat while walking, and drink while standing up.”
