Greetings and Asking Permission السلام والاستئذان

  • [6231] عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ :  (( يُسَلِّمُ الصَّغِيرُ عَلَى الكَبِيرِ  والمَارُّ عَلَى القَاعِدِ  وَالقَلِيلُ عَلَى الكَثِيرُ  ))

Narrated Abu Huraira

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The young should greet the old, the passer by should greet the sitting one, and the small group of persons should greet the large group of persons. ”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

  • [ 6249] عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رضي الله عنها  قَالَتْ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم (( يَا عَائِشَةُ  هَذَا جِبْرِيلُ يَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكِ السَّلامَ ))  قَالَتْ : قُلْتُ : وَعَليهِ السَّلامُ  وَرَحْمَةُ الله  تَرَى مَا لا نَرَى ؛ تَرِيدُ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم

Narrated `Aisha

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “O `Aisha! This is Gabriel sending his greetings to you.” I said, “Peace, and Allah’s Mercy be on him (Gabriel). You see what we do not see.” (She was addressing Allah’s Apostle)

  • [ 6250]  عن جَابِرَ بنِ عَبْدِالله رضي الله عنهما  قَالَ : أَتَيْتَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم  فِي دَيْنٍ كَانَ عَلَى أَبِي ؛ فَدَقَقْتُ البَّابَ ؛ فَقَالَ : ((مَنْ ذَا ؟ )) فَقُلْتُ : أَنَا  فَقَالَ : (( أَنَا أَنَا ) كَأَنَّهُ  كَرِهَهَا .

Narrated Jabir

I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) in order to consult him regarding my father’s debt. When I knocked on the door, he asked, “Who is that?” I replied, “I” He said, “I, I?” He repeated it as if he disliked it

  • [54] عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم (( لا تدخُلونَ الجَنَّةَ حَتَّى تُؤمنوا  ولا تُؤمنُوا حتَّى تَحَابُّوا ؛ أَوَلا أَدُلُّكُم  عَلَى شَيْءِ إِذَا فَعَلْتُمُوهُ تَحَابَبْتُم ؟ أَفْشُو السَّلامَ بَيْنَكُمْ ))

( صحيح مسلم )

Abu Huraira reported

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) observed: You shall not enter Paradise so long as you do not affirm belief (in all those things which are the articles of faith) and you will not believe as long as you do not love one another. Should I not direct you to a thing which, if you do, will foster love amongst you: (i. e.) give currency to (the practice of paying salutation to one another by saying) as-salamu alaikum

  • (2164 ) عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رضي الله عنهما قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : إِنَّ اليَهُودَ إِذَا سَلَّمُوا عَلَيْكُمْ  يَقُولُ أُحَدُهُمْ : السَّأمُ عَلَيْكُمْ  فَقُلْ : عَلَيْكَ ))

( صحيح مسلم )

Ibn ‘Umar reported Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying

When the Jews offer you salutations, some of them say as-Sam-u-‘Alaikum (death be upon you). You should say (in response to it): Let it be upon you

  • (2167)  عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه أَنَّ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ :  (( لا تَبْدَؤُا اليَهُودَ وَلَا النَّصَارَى بِالسَّلامِ ؛ فَإذَا لَقِيْتُمْ  أَحَدَهُمْ فِي طَرِيقٍ فَاضْطَرُّوهُ إِلَى أَضْيَقِهِ ))

( صحيح مسلم )

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying

Do not greet the Jews and the Christians before they greet you and when you meet any one of them on the roads force him to go to the narrowest part of it

  • (2727)  عن البراء بن عازب رضي الله عنهما قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : (( مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ فَيَتَصَافَحَانِ إِلَّا غُفِرَ لَهُمَا قَبْلَ أَنْ يَفْتَرِقَا ))

Narrated Al-Bara bin ‘Azib

that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “No two Muslims meet each other and shake hands, except that Allah forgives them before they part.”

  • (2728)  عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رضي الله عنه قَالَ :  قالَ رَجُلٌ : يَارَسُولَ اللهِ ؛ الرَّجُلُ مِنَّا يَلْقَى أَخَاهُ  أَوْ صَدِيقَهُ أَيَنْحَنِي لَهُ ؟ قَالَ : (( لا ))  قَالَ : أَفَيَلْتَزِمُهُ  وَيُقَبِّلُهُ ؟ قَالَ :((لا ))  قال : أَفَيَأْخُذُ بِيَدِهِ  وَيُصَافِحُهُ  قَالَ : (( نعم ))

Narrated Anas bin Malik

that a man said: “O Messenger of Allah! When a man among us meets his brother or his friend should he bow to him?” He said: “No.” The man continued: “Should he embrace him and kiss him?” He said: “No.” He said: “Should he take his hand and shake it?” He said: “Yes.”
