Supplications

  • (757)  عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ (( إِنَّ فِي اللَّيْلِ لَسَاعَةً لا يُوَافِقُهَا رَجُلٌ مُسْلِمٌ يَسْأَلُ اللهَ خَيْراً  مِنْ أَمْرِ الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ إِلَّا أَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ وَذَلِكَ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ ))

( صحيح مسلم )

Jabir said he heard Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) say

There is an hour during the night in which no Muslim individual will ask Allah for good in this world and the next without His giving it to him; and that applies to every night

( Sahih Muslim )

  • (758)  عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه أَنَّ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ :  (( يَنْزِلُ رَبُّنَا  تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا  حِيْنَ يَبْقَى ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ الآخِرُ فَيَقُولُ : مَنْ يَدْعُونِي فَأَسْتَجِيبَ لَهُ ؟ وَمَنْ يَسْأَلُنِي فَأُعْطِيَهُ ؟ وَمَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُنِي فَأَغْفِرُ لَهُ ))

( مسلم واخرجه البخاري ايضا )

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Abu Abdullah al-Agharr and from Abu Salama from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Our Lord, the Blessed and Exalted, descends every night to the heaven of this world when the last third of the night is still to come and says, ‘Who will call on Me so that I may answer him? Who will ask Me so that I may give him? Who will ask forgiveness of Me so that I may forgive him?’ ”

  • (2731)  عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم (( أَلَا أُخْبِرُكَ  بِأَحَبِّ الكَلامِ إِلَى الله ؟ ))  قُلْتُ : يَارَسُولَ الله ؛ أَخْبِرْنِي بِأَحَبِّ الكَلامِ إِلى اللهِ ؛ فَقَالَ : (( إِنَّ أَحَبَّ الكَلامِ إِلَى اللهِ : سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ ))

( صحيح مسلم )

Abu Dharr reported that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said

Should I not inform you about the words liked most by Allah? I said: Allah’s Mes- senger, do inform me about the words liked most by Allah. He said: Verily, the words liked most by Allah are:” hallowed be Allah and praise is due to Him.”

  • (2739)   عَنْ عَبْدِالله بْنِ عُمَرَ رضي الله عنهما  قَالَ : كَانَ مِنْ دُعَاءِ رَسُولِ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم (( اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ زَوَالِ نِعْمَتِكَ ؛ وَتَحَوُّلِ عَافِيَتِكَ ؛ وَفُجَاءَةِ نِقْمَتِكَ ؛ وَجَمِيعِ سَخَطِكَ ))

( صحيح مسلم )

‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to supplicate thus: “Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min zawali ni’matika, wa tahawwuli ‘afiyatika, wa fuja’ati niqmatika, wa jami’i sakhatika (O Allah! I seek refuge in You against the declining of Your Favours, passing of safety, the suddenness of Your punishment and all that which displeases You).”

  • (96)  عَنْ أَبِي نَعَامَةَ  أَنَّ عَبَدَاللهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ سَمِعَ ابْنَهُ يَقُولُ : الَّلهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ  القَصْرَ الأَبْيَضَ عَنْ يَمِينِ الجَنَّةِ إَذَا دَخَلْتَهَا  فَقَالَ : يَابُنَيَّ سْل اللهَ الجَنَّةَ وَتَعَوَّذْ بِهِ مِنَ النَّارِ  فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ : (( سَيَكُونُ فِي هَذِهِ الأُمَّةِ قَوْمٌ يَعْتَدُونَ فِي الطَّهُورِ  وَالدُّعَاءِ ))

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mughaffal

Abdullah heard his son praying to Allah: O Allah, I ask Thee a white palace on the right of Paradise when I enter it. He said: O my son, ask Allah for Paradise and seek refuge in Him from Hell-Fire, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: In this community there will be some people who will exceed the limits in purification as well as in supplication

  • (517) عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم :  (( لا يُرَدُّ الدُّعَاءُ بَيْنَ الأَذَانِ وَالِإقَامَةِ ))

Narrated Anas ibn Malik

The supplication made between the adhan and the iqamah is not rejected

(Sunan Abi Dawud)

  • (1481)  عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه أَنَّ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ : (( يُسْتَجَابُ لأَحَدِكُمْ  مَالَمْ يَعْجَلْ ؛ فَيَقوُلُ : قَدْ دَعَوْتُ  ؛ فَلَمْ يُسْتَجَبْ لِي ))

( سنن أبي داود )

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as saying

“One of you is granted an answer (to his supplication) provided he does not say: ‘I prayed but I was not granted an answer.'”

  • (1483)  عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ السَّكُونِيِّ ثُمَّ العَوْفِيِّ أَنَّ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ : إذَا سَأَلْتُمُ اللهَ فَاسْأَلُوهُ  بِبطُونِ أَكُفِّكُمْ  وَلَا تَسْأَلُوهُ بِظُهُورِهَا ))

( سنن أبي داود )

Narrated Malik ibn Yasar as-Sakuni, al-Awfi

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When you make requests to Allah, do so with the palms of your hands, and not backs, upwards

  • (1515) عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رضي الله عنهما  قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم : (( مَنْ لَزِمَ الإِسْتِغْفَارَ جَعَلَ اللهُ لَهُ مِنْ كُلِّ ضِيقٍ مَخْرَجَا وَمِنْ كُلِّ هَم ٍّفَرَجَا ؛ وَرَزَقَهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لا يَحْتِسِبُ  ))

( سنن أبي داود )

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone continually asks pardon, Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress, and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide for him from where he did not reckon

(Sunan Abi Dawud)

  • (1521) عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ عَنْ عَبْدِالله : أَنَّ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يُعْجِبُهُ أَنْ يَدْعُوا ثَلاثًا وَيَسْتَغْفِرَ ثَلاثًا  ))

( سنن أبي داود )

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas’ud

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) liked to supplicate three times and to ask pardon (of Allah) three times

  • (1522) عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ  قَالَتْ : قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم (( أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكِ كَلِمَاتٍ تَقُولِينَهُنَّ  عِنْدَ الكَرْبِ ؛ أَوْ فِي الكَرْبِ : اللهُ اللهُ رَبِّي لا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا  ))

( سنن أبي داود )

Narrated Asma’ daughter of Umays

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: May I not teach you phrases which you utter in distress? (These are:) “Allah , Allah is my Lord, I do not associate anything as partner with Him.”

(Sunan Abi Dawud)

  • (1526) عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الخُدْرِيِّ  رضي الله عنه أَنَّ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ : (( مَنْ قَالَ : رَضِيتُ بِاللهِ رَبًّا وَبِالإِسْلَامِ دِينًا وَ بِمُحَمَّدٍ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَبِيًّا وَرَسُولًا  وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الجَنَّةُ  ))

( سنن أبي داود )

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as saying

If anyone says “I am pleased with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion and with Muhammad (peace be upon him) as Apostle” Paradise will be his due

(Sunan Abi Dawud)

  • (1529) عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِاللهِ رضي الله عنهما  قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم :  (( لا تَدْعُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِكُمْ ؛ وَلَا تَدْعُوا عَلَى أَوْلَادِكُمْ ؛ وَلَا تَدْعُوا عَلَى خَدَمِكُمْ ؛ وَلَا تَدْعُوا عَلَى أَمْوَالِكُمْ ؛ لَا تُوَافِقُوا مِنَ اللهِ سَاعَةَ نَيْلٍ فِيهَا عَطَاءٌ فَيَسْتَجِيبُ لَكُمْ  ))

( سنن أبي داود )

Jabir b. ‘Abd Allah reported the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as saying

Do not invoke curse on yourselves, and do not invoke curse on your children, and do not invoke curse on your servants, and do not invoke curse on your property, lest you happen to do it at a time when Allah is asked for something and grants your request

(Sunan Abi Dawud)

  • (1534)  عن أبي بدرة بن عبدالله  أن أباه حدثه : أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا خَافَ قَوْمًا قَالَ : (( اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَجْعَلُكَ فِي نُحُورِهِمْ  وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شُرُورِهِمْ  ))

( سنن أبي داود )

Narrated AbuMusa al-Ash’ari

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) feared a (group of) people, he would say: “O Allah, we make Thee our shield against them, and take refuge in Thee from their evils

(Sunan Abi Dawud)

  • (1540)  عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رضي الله عنه قَالَ :كَانَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ : (( اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ العَجْزِ  وَالكَسَلِ ؛ وَالجُبْنِ وَالبُخْلِ ؛ وَالهَرَمِ ؛ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ القَبْرِ ؛ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ المَحْيَا وَالمَمَاتِ ))

( سنن أبي داود )

Anas b. Malik said

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from weakness, and laziness, and cowardice, and old age, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trails of the life and death.”

(Sunan Abi Dawud)

  • (1541) عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ  الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَقُولُ:  (( اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ الفَقْرِ وَالقِلَّةِ وَالذِّلَّةِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ ))

( سنن أبي داود )

Narrated AbuHurayrah

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say: “O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from poverty”, lack and abasement, and I seek refuge in Thee lest I cause or suffer wrong

(Sunan Abi Dawud)

  •  (1542)  عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رضي الله عَنْهُمَا قَالَ : : كَانِ مِنْ دُعَاءِ  رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم (( اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ زَوَالِ نِعْمَتِكِ  وَتَحوُّلِ عَافِيَتَكَ  وَفُجَاءَةِ نَقْمَتِكَ  وَجَمِيعِ سَخَطِكَ ))

( سنن أبي داود )

‘Abd Allah b. ‘Umar said that one of the supplications of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You that Your blessings are lifted, and Your protection (of me) is changed, and in the suddenness of Your punishment, and from all Your anger

(Sunan Abi Dawud)

  • (1543)  عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ  الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَدْعُوا  يَقُولُ : (( اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشِّقَاقِ والنِفَاقِ وَسُوءِ الأَخْلاقِ  ))

( سنن أبي داود )

Narrated AbuHurayrah

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to supplicate by saying: “O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from divisiveness, hypocrisy, and evil character.”

  • (486) عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الخَطَّابِ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : إِنَّ الدُّعَاءَ مَوْقُوفٌ بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالأَرْضِ لا يَصْعَدُ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ حَتَّى تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى نَبِيِّكَ صلى الله عليه وسلم

( جامع الترمذي )

Umar bin Al-Khattab narrated

“Indeed the supplication stops between the heavens and the earth. Nothing of it is raised up until you send Salat upon your Prophet.”

  • (1905) عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم :  (( ثَلاثُ دَعَوَاتٍ مُسْتَجَابَاتٌ  لا شَكَّ فِيهِنَّ  : دَعْوَةُ المَظْلُومِ  وَدَعْوَةُ المُسَافِرِ وَدَعْوَةُ الوَالِدِ عَلَى وَلَدِهِ  ))

( جامع الترمذي )

Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated

that the Messenger of Allah said: “Three supplications are responded to: The supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveler, and the supplication of the parent against his child.”

  • (2139) عَنْ سَلْمَانَ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم (( لا يَرُدُّ القَضَاءَ إِلَّا الدُّعَاءُ وَلَا يَزِيدُ فِي العُمْرِ إِلَّا البِرُّ ))

( جامع الترمذي )

‘Salman narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said

“Nothing turns back the Decree except supplication, and nothing increases the life-span except righteousness.”

  • (2140) عَنْ أَنَسٍ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَقُولَ (( يَامُقَلِّبَ القَلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ )) فَقُلْتُ : يَارَسُولَ الله ؛ آمَّنَا بِكَ وَبِمَا جِئْتَ بِهِ ؛ فَهَلْ تَخَافُ عَلَيْنَا ؟ قَالَ : (( نَعَمْ ؛ إِنَّ القُلُوبَ بَيْنَ أُصْبَعَيْنِ مِنْ أَصَابِعِ اللهِ يُقَلِّبُهَا كَيْفَ يَشَاءُ ))

( جامع الترمذي )

‘Anas narrated

“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would often say: Ya Muqallibal-qulub, thabbit qalbi ‘ala dinik(‘O Changer of the Hearts! Strengthen my heart upon Your Religion.)’ So I said: ‘O Prophet of Allah! We believe in you and what you have come with, but do you fear for us?’ He said: ‘Yes. Indeed the hearts are between two Fingers of Allah’s Fingers, He changes them as He wills.'”

  • (2169) عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ اليَمَانِ  رضي الله عنه عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ : وَالَّذِي نِفْسِي بِيَدِهِ  لَتَأْمُرُنَّ بِالمَعْرُوفِ وَلَتَنْهَوُنَّ عَنْ المُنْكَرِ  أَوْ لَيُوشِكَنَّ اللهُ أَنْ يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عِقَابًا مِنْهُ  ثُمَّ تَدْعُونَهُ فَلَا يُسْتَجَابُ لَكُمْ ))

( جامع الترمذي )

Hudhaifah bin Al-Yaman narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said

“By the One in Whose Hand is my soul! Either you command good and forbid evil, or Allah will soon send upon you a punishment from Him, then you will call upon Him, but He will not respond to you. ”

  • (3370) عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عَنِ النَّبِيَّ  صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ : (( لَيْسَ شَيْءٌ أَكْرَمَ  عَلَى الله مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ ))

( جامع الترمذي )

Abu Hurairah narrated that

The Prophet said: “There is nothing more honorable with Allah [Most High] than supplication.”

  • (3373) عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : (( إِنَّهُ مَنْ لَمْ يَسْأَلِ اللهَ يَغْضَبُ عَلَيْهِ  ))

( جامع الترمذي )

Abu Hurairah (ra) narrated that

the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, he who does not ask Allah, he gets angry with him.”

  • (3378)  عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَأَبِي سَعِيدٍ الخُدْرِيِّ  رضي الله عنهما  : أَنَّهُمَا شَهِدَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم  أَنَّهُ قَالَ (( مَا مِنْ قَوْمٍ  يَذْكُرُونَ اللهَ  إِلَّا حَفَتْ بِهِمُ المَلائِكَةُ  وَغَشِيَتْهُمُ الرَّحْمَةُ  وَنَزَلَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّكِينَةُ وَذَكَرَهُمُ الله فِيمَنْ عِنْدَهُ ))

( جامع الترمذي )

Al-Agharr Abu Muslim narrated that

He bears witness, from Abu Hurairah and Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri, that they bear witness, from the Messenger of Allah, that he said: “There is no group that remembers Allah, except that the angels encompass them, mercy covers them, and tranquility descends upon them: and Allah remembers (mentions) them before those who are with Him.”

  • (3381) عَنْ جَابِرٍ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ :(( مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ يَدْعُو بِدُعَاءٍ إِلَّا آتَاهُ اللهُ مَا سَأَلَ أَوْ كَفَّ عَنْهُ مِنَ السُّوءِ مِثْلَهُ  ؛ مَالَمْ يَدْعُ بِإِثْمٍ أَوْ قَطِيعَةِ رَحِمٍ ))

( جامع الترمذي )

Jabir narrated that

the Messenger of Allah said: “There is none who utters a supplication, except that Allah gives him what he asked, or prevents evil from him that is equal to it – as long as he does not supplicate for something evil, or the cutting of ties of the womb.”

  • (3382) عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم :  (( مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَسْتَجِيبَ اللهُ لَهُ عِنْدَ الشَّدَائِدِ وَالكَرْبِ فَلْيُكْثِرِ الدُّعَاءَ فِي الرَّخَاءِ ))

( جامع الترمذي )

Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated that

The Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever wishes that Allah would respond to him during hardship and grief, then let him supplicate plentifully when at ease.”

  • (3433)  عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم :  (( مَنْ جَلَسَ فِي مَجْلِسٍ فَكَثُرَ فِيهِ لَغَطُهُ  فَقَالَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَقُومَ مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ ذَلِكَ : سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ  وَبِحَمْدِكَ  ؛ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ ؛ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ ؛ إِلَّا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا كَانَ فِي مَجْلِسِهِ ذَلِكَ ))

Abu Hurairah narrated that

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever sits in a sitting and engages in much empty, meaningless speech and then says before getting from that sitting of his: ‘Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek You forgiveness, and I repent to You, (Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa biḥamdika, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā anta, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilaik)’ whatever occurred in that sitting would be forgiven to him.”

  • (3552) عَنْ رِفَاعَةَ رضي الله عنه قَالَ : قَامَ أَبُوبَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ  رضي الله عنه  عَلَى المَنْبَرِ ثُمَّ بَكَى فَقَالَ : قَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ  صلى الله عليه وسلم  عَامَ الأَوَّلِ  عَلَى الِمنْبَرِ ثُمَّ بَكَى ؛ فَقَالَ (( اسْأَلُوا اللهَ العَفْوَ وَالعَافِيَةَ  فَإنَّ أَحَدًا لَمْ يُعْطَ بَعْدَ اليَقِينِ خَيْرًا مِنَ العَافِيَةِ ))

( جامع الترمذي )

Mu`adh bin Rifa`ah narrated from his father, that he said

“Abu Bakr stood upon the Minbar, then wept, and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood upon the Minbar the first year (of Hijrah), then wept, and said: “Ask Allah for pardon and Al-`Āfiyah, for verily, none has been given anything better than Al-`Āfiyah.’”
