Vows and Oaths النذر واليمين

  • [ 6693] عَنْ عَبْدِالله بْنِ عُمَرَ رضي الله عنهما : نَهَى النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَنِ النَّذْرِ وَقَالَ : (( إِنَّهُ لا يَرُدُّ شَيْئًا وَلَكِنَّهُ يُسْتَخْرَجُ بِهِ مِنَ البَخِيلِ ))

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar

The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade the making of vows and said, “It (a vow) does not prevent anything (that has to take place), but the property of a miser is spent (taken out) with it.”

  • [6696]  عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رضي الله عنها  عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ (( مَنْ نَذَرَ أَنْ يُطِيعَ الله فَلْيُطِعْهُ  وَمَنْ نَذَرَ أَنْ يَعْصِيهِ فَلا يَعْصِهِ ))

It was narrated from ‘Aishah that the Messenger of Allah said

“Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him, and whoever vows to disobey Allah, let him not disobey Him.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

  • (1640)  عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عنه أَنَّ رَسُولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ :  (( لاتَنْذِرُوا  فَإِنَّ النَّذْرَ لا يُغْنِي مِنَ القَدَرِ شَيْئاً  وَإِنَّمَا يُسْتَخْرَجُ  بِهِ مِنَ البَخِيلِ ))

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said

“Do not make vows, for a vow does not have any impact on the Qadar. Rather it is just a means of taking wealth from the miserly.”

( Sahih Muslim )

  • ( 1645) عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ رضي الله عنه عَنْ رَسُولِ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم  قَالَ (( كَفَّارَةُ النَّذْرِ كَفَّارَةُ اليَمِينِ ))

( صحيح مسلم )

Narrated ‘Uqba bin ‘Aamir (RA)

Allah’s Mssenger (peace be upon him) said: “The atonement for a vow (Nadhr) is (the same as) the atonement an oath (Yamin).” [Reported by Muslim]. at-Tirmidhi added, “If he did not specify it.” [And he graded it Sahih (authentic)]

  •  (1530) عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي الله عَنِ النَّبِيَّ  صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ : (( مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ  فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلْيَفْعَلْ ))

( جامع الترمذي )

Narrated Abu Hurairah

That the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever takes an oath, and then he sees that something else is better than it, then he should make atonement for his oath and then do it.”
